Special Features of Pusher Centrifuges

Jul. 18, 2022

The pusher centrifuge is a continuously operating filtration centrifuge used to process bulk products in the chemical or mineral industries. Propulsion centrifuge technology has evolved over the past few years, improving energy efficiency and operational methods. This article provides you with some of the features of pusher centrifuges.

Operation

The operation of a pusher centrifuge is simple. The suspension enters the feed distributor through the feed tube, which rotates with the basket, thereby accelerating the suspension and distributing it evenly into the feed zone.
Most of the liquid is filtered out here. In the feed zone, the solids grow to form a stable filter cake ring, which is conveyed in the direction of solids discharge. At the end of the basket, solids are ejected with each pusher movement, resulting in a continuous solids discharge.
Pusher centrifuges come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The smallest centrifuges can process at least 100 kg of solids per hour, and the feeding, filtering and operation of these units have become easier, more reliable and more economical over the years.

Particle Crushing

In all propulsion centrifuges, the suspension is accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 km/h over a distance of a few decimeters and within a fraction of a second. If this acceleration is not performed in the most appropriate manner, the feed process is prone to particle fragmentation and suboptimal distribution. Uniform distribution of the suspension is also essential for smooth operation of the propeller centrifuge, as it minimizes the risk of imbalance, which is a major cause of increased machine and screen wear.
Minimizing particle fragmentation is also desirable because the negative impact of a high percentage of fines in the discharged product can lead to higher residual moisture content and lower yields in the filter cake, since the more particles are fragmented, the more material and the more valuable the final product is. lost in the filtrate.

Pre-filtration

To ensure smooth operation of the propeller centrifuge, most of the liquid must be removed by centrifugal force in the feed zone. At low solids concentrations, liquids that are not removed quickly enough by filtration can splash around due to the motion of the pusher and then re-wet the already dry filter cake. To prevent these problems, external thickening systems such as hydrocyclones or bent screens are used in many cases.

HUADA's pre-filtration technology solves the problem. Our centrifuges can also handle suspensions down to 10% solids without external pre-concentrators, while propeller centrifuges with pre-filtration technology can handle temporary or permanent upstream changes without any further operator intervention.

Maintenance

Pusher centrifuges are often used with highly corrosive and abrasive products that can cause severe wear. Materials such as high-grade stainless steel, duplex or super duplex steel, and in some cases even titanium, which are suitable for high temperatures or particularly harsh conditions, can significantly reduce wear. In addition, regular inspection and maintenance work is essential to ensure efficient and reliable operation.
