3 to 6 months or never replace Bio Rings | Aquarium Filter ...

I generally rinse bio-media every 2-3 months, checking it every 3-4 weeks. The only time I'd consider replacing is if it was so bad that the whole rings are coated in muck like a chocolate covered girl scout cookie - then you've got no ceramic for your bacteria to grow on...and cleaning would just kill whatever is there. Then again...if it's that bad, the bacteria that was on the ceramic is probably dead from starvation because the muck blocked it from feeding on the water.

You should only have to replace mechanical and chemical media. What kind of filter is it? I'm assuming a canister or media friendly HOB I generally rinse bio-media every 2-3 months, checking it every 3-4 weeks.
